What to expect during a standby generator consultation and installation

A standby generator is not an appliance that should be selected from a single number on a box. A safe, reliable installation begins with understanding the household, the property and the electrical loads the homeowner wants to protect.

Knowing what happens at each stage makes the process easier to evaluate and helps homeowners compare proposals based on more than generator size or price.

1. Initial Conversation: What Do You Need During an Outage?

The first step is determining what matters most when utility power is unavailable. Some homeowners want to maintain heat, refrigeration, lights, internet and a well pump. Others want broader coverage that includes cooking equipment, air conditioning or most of the home.

This conversation should also consider how often the property loses power, how long outages tend to last, whether anyone has medical or accessibility needs, and whether the home may add future electrical loads.

2. Site Assessment

The contractor reviews the electrical service and panel, possible generator locations, access, drainage, ventilation, nearby windows and doors, and the route for electrical and fuel connections. Placement must satisfy the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and applicable codes and local requirements.

A property can present practical limitations, but those limitations should be identified before equipment is ordered—not improvised on installation day.

3. Electrical Load Review and Generator Sizing

Generator sizing should be based on the loads the system is expected to carry and how those loads operate. Motors, pumps, air conditioners and other equipment can require additional power when starting. Simply adding the wattage printed on appliance labels may not produce an accurate design.

Load-management equipment can allow selected high-demand circuits to operate in a planned sequence. In some homes, this provides broader useful coverage without unnecessarily oversizing the generator.

4. Fuel-Supply Review

Most residential standby generators use natural gas or propane. The available fuel supply must be evaluated for the selected generator and other connected appliances. Depending on the home, coordination with a qualified gas contractor or fuel supplier may be required.

5. Written Proposal and Scope

A clear proposal should identify the recommended generator, transfer equipment, circuits or loads to be supported, anticipated electrical and fuel work, permits, site preparation, exclusions, warranty information and maintenance expectations. Homeowners should understand what is included before approving the project.

6. Permits, Equipment and Scheduling

Required permits and inspections vary with the work and location. Once the design and scope are approved, equipment can be ordered and the electrical, gas and site work coordinated. Timelines can be affected by permit processing, equipment availability, utility requirements and the complexity of the property.

7. Installation and Transfer Equipment

The generator is placed on an appropriate base and connected to the home’s electrical system through approved transfer equipment. The transfer switch isolates the home from utility power before generator power is supplied, protecting both the household and utility workers.

Electrical and fuel work must be completed by appropriately qualified professionals. The installation should never rely on makeshift connections or backfeeding through a household receptacle.

8. Inspection, Testing and Homeowner Orientation

After installation, required inspections are completed and the system is tested. The homeowner should be shown how automatic operation works, where key controls and shutoffs are located, what warning indicators mean, and what maintenance the manufacturer requires.

The handover should also explain which loads the generator is designed to support. Even an automatic system works best when the homeowner understands its capabilities and limitations.

9. Ongoing Maintenance

A standby generator is an engine and electrical system that may sit unused for long periods before being asked to perform immediately. Routine exercise does not replace maintenance. Oil, filters, battery condition, fuel supply, fault history and overall operation should be checked according to the manufacturer’s requirements.

A professional generator consultation is not a sales formality. It is where the safest location, suitable capacity, realistic coverage and complete installation scope are established. Good planning helps prevent expensive surprises and produces a system designed for the home it will actually serve.
